Why my family hates me reading fiction books

My Father:
If you read books that will actually help you in life, like books about science, I have no problem with it. But if you read fiction books, it just wastes your time and distracts you from school, which makes you get bad grades.

What I think:
I think that I should read more fiction books because I can expand my knowledge of abstract human experiences and creativity. Every book, even fiction ones, are based off something real and things can be learned from them. Sure I'm not actually doing whatever it is I'm reading about, but by reading the character's reactions and actions I have a better understanding of that topic and have a rough idea of what to and what not to do in those situations. Without actually putting myself in danger, I know what to do. I can also connect with people and things that don't exist through reading the books.
